Getting ready for a photoshoot checklist

Planning your photoshoot can be overwhelming, not only because you have to be in front of the camera and you care about the result a lot. But also because each photoshoot needs time to get ready with if you want to have a great result. Here are some tips how you can be ready and rock your next photoshoot.

  1. WHAT’S YOUR GOAL?

It all starts with the question, why do you want a photoshoots? So depending on the reasons you decide which type of the photoshoot you need. That can be:

  • capturing your current emotions, your period of life
  • getting some memories that can last through years
  • becoming more confident and celebrating self love
  • capturing an important event in your life
  • getting business headshots
  • getting visual content and elevating your social media presence
  • build your personal brand

Be ready to share your thoughts and ideas with the photographer you’ve selected. The better you describe what you want, the better your expectations will be met in the end result.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Make sure you browsed the photographer’s work, their social media and you like what you see and the personality resonates with you. Choose the photographer whos style you really like and that meets all your needs, business or personal.

3. LOCATIONS

Look for the locations that go inline with your goals. The better the locations match your ideas and goals, the more context you can bring to your photos.

  • Studio or outside?
  • Beach or in the woods?
  • Fields or mountains?
  • Nature or urban?

Share your favourite locations with your photographer or ask for an advise!

4. WARDROBE

Get ready with your outfits beforehand. You can do that yourself, with your stylist or ask your photographer for recommendations and help. No matter what’s your wardrobe planning routine would be, don't forget to share your final looks with the photographer so they can get more ideas on which location spot to pick, how to plan the lighting etc.

Closer to the date of the photoshoot make sure your clothes are cleaned and ironed.

5. HAIR & MAKE UP

Another important thing is to plan your hairstyle and make up you want beforehand. If you are going to hire HMUA, make sure to share a photoshoot moodpboard with them and send them references on what style you want. If you are doing this yourself, you can ask your photographer for some ideas or an advise. Planning that in advance will help you not to do everything the last minute and not to get stressed the day of the photoshoot.

6. MANICURE & PEDICURE

This one  deserves its own point to outline how important that is! Bad chipped manicure can completely ruin the portrait! Hands should be neat and well groomed, for example for portraits with hands, pictures of details or jewelry

7. PLANNING YOUR PROPS & ACESSORIES

That’s also something that you can discuss with your photographer in advance. Share your ideas or brainstorm on them together. Do you want to have a book or a magazine, need some flowers, sweets or a champagne bottle. Or maybe your idea involves some furniture, like a chair? Make sure that by the day of the photoshoot you have everything ready.
